Signs of stress can affect 3 main areas: cognitive, emotional, physical or behavioral. Stress can speed up deterioation of a physical problem like Multiply Sclerosis, which if treated with Cognitive Behaviour Therapy may slow down the deterioation and aid quality of life

Chronic stress has also been shown to impair developmental growth in children by lowering the pituitary gland's production of growth hormone, as in children associated with a home environment involving serious marital discord, alcoholism, or child abuse
