Occupational Health Services - Employee Assistance Programs

Overcoming Pain with CBT

Employees and their household members may use EAPs to help manage issues that could adversely impact their work and personal lives. EAP counselors typically provide assessment, support, and if needed, referrals to additional resources. These programs are becoming increasingly more common in today's worksites, and as the field grows, the responsibilities of employee assistance professionals are expanding as well. The issues for which EAPs provide support vary, but examples include:
▪ Substance abuse
▪ Safe working environment
▪ Emotional distress
▪ Major life events, including births, accidents and deaths
▪ Health care concerns
▪ Financial or legal concerns
▪ Family/personal relationship issues
▪ Work relationship issues
▪ Concerns about aging parents

What is CBT?

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is a tradition that focuses on the way people think and act in order to help them overcome their emotional and behavioural problems

The effectiveness of CBT has been extensively researched more than any other Therapy and has shown that people stay well longer. This positive result is due in part to the educational aspects of CBT, which can be applied to help an individual to become their own CBT Therapist.  Take the step and be an Overcomer, your problem will not dominate you again!

Why choose CBT in the City?
The UK Health and Safety Executive has stated that 'Work-related stress, depression or anxiety is the leading cause of working days lost through work-related injury or ill health, with an estimated 12.5 million days a year lost in 2003/4.'

Each year 91 million working days are lost due to mental ill-health and 1 million people are on long term sick-leave due to mental illness, and of those on sick-leave for more than 1 year, less than 5% return to work. The cost to the economy of mental ill health is of the order of £77bn per annum
